Hazardous Waste - Universal Waste
Called universal waste, these items contain harmful chemicals which, if disposed of improperly, may be harmful to people and the environment.
Virtually all electronic devices that contain a battery or circuit board - including computers, printers, cell phones, stereos, and even some appliances like microwave ovens - are targeted in the new regulations, because they often contain heavy metals like lead, copper, and chromium.
Household batteries, mercury thermometers, thermostats with mercury, fluorescent tubes, and compact bulbs are also among the prohibited products.

Dispose of Hazardous Waste and E-Waste the Right Way
Many common household products pose a hazard to the environment if disposed of improperly. Materials such as used motor oil, paint, turpentine, acid or lye-based cleaners, household and car batteries, pesticides and garden herbicides can damage the environment if tossed in the trash or poured down a sink or storm drain.
Household E-Waste is consumer electronic equipment near the end of its useful life such as computer monitors and televisions which cannot be disposed of in trash cans. Unfortunately, electronic waste is a growing problem although many of these products can be reused, refurbished, or recycled, including items such as VCRs, stereos, fax machines, copiers, computer keyboards and cellular telephones.
Collect those unwanted household hazardous waste and e-waste items and bring them to a free Roundup. We’ll recycle what we can and properly dispose of the rest. It’s easy to participate. Leave the products in their original container, place them in a cardboard box and drive to the Roundup site. The entire process only takes a few minutes and you never have to leave your car. No explosive or radioactive materials, tires or waste from business will be accepted. Please do not mix products together.
The Free Countywide Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Roundup is brought to you by the County of Los Angeles and presented by the Department of Public Works and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, in cooperation with the city of Azusa and the neighboring cities of Arcadia, Baldwin Park, Bradbury, Covina, Duarte, El Monte, Glendora, Irwindale, Monrovia, San Dimas and West Covina.
- Household Hazardous Waste includes paints, glues, pesticides, oils, solvents, cleansers, old medicine, and car and dry-cell batteries.
- E-Waste includes computer monitors, televisions, VCRs, stereos, fax machines, computer keyboards and cellular telephones.
Improper disposal of these materials can pollute the environment and endanger children and pets.
Remember:
- Limit of 15 gallons or 125 lbs. per vehicle
- Do not mix materials, keep original labels on containers
- Put in a sturdy box in the trunk of your car
- No waste from business will be accepted
- No explosives, ammunition or radioactive materials will be accepted
